  1. Just wanted to make a quick comment on one of my findings in this project so far: I find myself shooting in a lot of really poor/really low/really ugly temperature light lately. Of course, as soon as November started, the clouds moved in, the blue sky left us, the rain commenced, and the leaves on the trees and in the streets were waterlogged. It's been tough to find nice light for nice exposures, so I'm B&W editing everything... It's been challenging.

  2. Kris, do you consider yourself a person who sees in color, or for whom color is a really important part of the feeling of your images? Because I think your black and whites are pretty rockin, and the conversion seems to suit your pictures quite well. I know it's probably frustrating if you see it as a salvage rather than your intention, but you should know the images are not suffering one bit.

  3. Heather--thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I see some images in color, depending on what the color and composition are saying. Shooting B&W film has somewhat trained me to look for contrast tonality when the time is right, so I do see some digital compositions as B&W (day 8 is a good example, I knew I wanted that to be a high contrast B&W silhouette).

For me, with film anyway, B&W was always the go-to when the light was shitty, light temperature was unpredictable, or I just wanted something versatile and dramatic. I still see B&W the same way, and I'm still fine to do B&W conversions on images with poor light/shitty WB. I think I was just feeling a little insecure about the fact that I'm uploading predominantly B&W images, mostly because I'm using B&W as a bit of a crutch since Portland has been gloomy n' whatnot lately.

    1. Interesting thing about shitty light and color in digital is that you can take it as it is (which never feels good unfortunately), abandon it with BW, or push it into some other place entirely towards a purpose. It is possible to run with it and make it a subject in itself. If the world is dark and desaturated, maybe we exaggerate that. Maybe a fluorescent bulb and a debris all over the floor is just the kind of ugly that needs exploiting. Maybe life is sallow and blue and cold. Maybe faces are gray. And of course that's why when a girl shows up to the party wearing hot pink, she becomes the object of our affection.

  4. Heather, I'm having a hard time finding abstract compositions like yours. I actually set out to shoot some abstracts and found no results I liked. I think we need to hang out. Nice works!

    1. Dude. It may take a while, but I definitely want to come see you folks in Portland. And when I do, maybe you can teach me how to loosen up and coax some of these kind of gentle people pictures. Very much enjoying your eyeball.
